Chapter Twelve
I had dreams of serving a summons to appear in divorce court most of the night. I was tucking those away in my memory for the next time I ranted about my job. Not that I do that but rarely.
I left myself a list after studying Rogersâ files last night. The first item was to call Peggy and find out about Rogersâ case where he was following the sheriff and commissioner.
I briefly considered putting Peggy on the list of suspects, she had leant him money just to keep the business going and she had easy access to slip him poison. But despite that I couldnât see her as the killer. But I didnât completely rule it out. Which is why the missing file on the Sheriff and Commissioner job seemed to point to Peggy too.
I wanted to look up any social media on Dr. Gloria Vanders and this Donald Guy to see if I recognized them from the security tapes I resigned myself to the fact I had to either watch all the tapes Liam had, or ask Liam if they looked familiar. But before all that, I wanted to swing by Rogersâ office and see if Peggy Faire knew anything about the missing file.
I drove by the six red brick offices in the strip mall, and only Rick Rogers had the lights on at the early hour of seven in the morning. There was no movement as I drove past. Maybe Peggy Faire was boxing up his office in the back.
I parked in the side lot with one other car and the weeds growing in every crack in the asphalt. The silver two door compact must be Peggyâs. I found the office door was locked, probably too early for her usual hours.
I knocked, âPeggy, itâs Julienne. I was here yesterday, remember?â No answer.
I peeked through the large picture window. The lights were on but there was no sign of anybody around. Maybe she forgot to turn the lights off when she left yesterday. I tried knocking until my knuckles hurt and gave up. I would call her and set a time to come by and talk with her.
It took longer than I expected to get to work; I had hit the rush hour traffic. When I finally arrived, I sat in the employee parking and phoned Rogersâ office. There was no answer so it went to voicemail. I guess if I was the only employee and maybe looking for another PI, I might come in late to the office. That seemed the likely reason she wasnât answering. I left a message for her to call me and walked to my office. I forgot all about phoning her again as my duties took over.
Mid morning I took a few moments to search for Dr. Vanders and her husband online. There was a LinkedIn with no profile picture. Her Facebook had some photos of social events at least. I printed a photo out of both her and her husband for reference.
